Investor confidence is on the rise, particularly in technology-driven enterprises such as AI and Web 3. Bengaluru based artificial intelligence (AI) startupSarvam AI, a homegrown generative AI firm, has successfully raised an unprecedented USD 41 million in its Series A funding round. The funding was spearheaded by Lightspeed Ventures, with significant participation from Peak XV Partners and Khosla Ventures, signifying robust investor enthusiasm for cutting-edge AI technologies.

What Does Sarvam AI Specialize in?

Founded in July 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, former members of the AI4Bharat initiative backed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, Sarvam AI specializes in generative AI technology and involves the creation of diverse content, spanning text, imagery, audio, synthetic data, and conversational AI.

".....this full-stack approach will accelerate adoption of GenAI in India, especially given that enterprises see the potential of GenAI but are grappling with how to leverage it for their business," the company said in a statement.

The startup's comprehensive approach encompasses research-led innovations for training custom AI models and an enterprise-grade platform facilitating the authoring and deployment of these models. Sarvam AI aims to collaboratively develop domain-specific AI models by leveraging the rich data sets of its partners.

How Sarvam AI Focuses on India-Specific Offerings?

Sarvam AI plans to utilize the substantial funding to concentrate on India-specific offerings. This strategic focus includes training AI models to support the diverse set of Indian languages and developing voice-first interfaces. The startup envisions addressing the unique challenges faced by enterprises in India, guiding them on how to effectively leverage Generative AI for their business operations.

Population-Scale Impact on India Stack

The startup aspires to make a population-scale impact by integrating Generative AI, or Gen AI, with the highly successful India Stack, particularly for public-good applications. Gen AI is gaining traction globally, attracting attention from software giants like SAP, Salesforce, and IBM. While the adoption of generative AI has been swift in the West, Indian SaaS and tech companies are increasingly exploring opportunities in this burgeoning space.

Riding the Generative AI Wave in India

Sarvam AI's funding announcement aligns with the broader trend of growing investor interest in Generative AI startups in India. The rapid adoption and rising demand for generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, have led to a surge in Indian GenAI-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) startups. According to a report by SaaSBoomi and McKinsey, these startups have collectively raised over USD 590 million in funding as of May 2023.

Strategic Collaboration for Population-Scale AI Applications

Harshjit Sethi, Managing Director at Peak XV, highlighted the unique position of Sarvam AI in the market. “Large scale adoption of AI in India will require not only building uniquely Indian use cases but also delivering them at prices that everyone can afford and we believe the Sarvam team is best positioned to accomplish this," said Harshjit Sethi, Managing Director, Peak XV,” he said.

As Sarvam AI sets its sights on pioneering AI innovations tailored for the Indian landscape, the record-breaking Series A funding is expected to propel the startup towards realizing its vision of making a significant and scalable impact on the AI landscape in India.
