Swavalambini: The Game-Changer for Women Entrepreneurs in India

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in collaboration with NITI Aayog, has taken a decisive step towards fostering women-led businesses with the launch of Swavalambini: Women Entrepreneurship Programme. Unveiled at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, this initiative is set to transform entrepreneurial aspirations into reality for women in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

A Vision for Women-Led Growth

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and MoS for Education, Jayant Chaudhary, inaugurated the programme with a strong message on women-led development. He underscored the importance of moving beyond schemes where women are mere recipients, advocating instead for initiatives where they become leaders of economic growth.

Swavalambini is designed to in still confidence in young women and equip them with the necessary tools to build and scale their ventures. Women’s participation is key to India’s progress, and by providing them with resources, training, and financial support, we can unlock their full potential,” he stated.

Recognizing the role of education in this transformation, he also announced plans to introduce AI-related courses in schools and colleges to ensure students remain future-ready.

A Structured Pathway to Entrepreneurship

Swavalambini follows a multi-stage approach to training, mentorship, and business incubation. Implemented by the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD) in collaboration with NITI Aayog, the initiative offers:

  • Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP): A two-day workshop to introduce 600 female students to entrepreneurial fundamentals.
  • Women Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP): A 40-hour training for 300 selected participants focusing on business growth, finance, market access, and legal frameworks.
  • Mentorship & Handholding: A six-month support system helping participants transition their ideas into sustainable businesses.
  • Faculty Development Programme (FDP): A five-day workshop for faculty to mentor budding entrepreneurs.
  • Award to Rewards Initiative: Recognition and funding for outstanding women-led business ventures.

Nationwide Expansion of Swavalambini

After successful implementation at IIT Bhubaneswar, Utkal University, North-Eastern Hill University, Mizoram University, and Gauhati University, Swavalambini is now reaching Banaras Hindu University (BHU), University of Hyderabad, and Maulana Azad National Urdu University. The initiative aims to establish at least 10% of EDP-trained participants as successful entrepreneurs, driving economic impact across regions.

Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

To further solidify the foundation of entrepreneurship education, NIESBUD has signed two strategic Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs):

  • With Skills Development Network (SDN) – Partnering with Wadhwani Foundation to enhance entrepreneurial skills and curriculum.
  • With Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut – Promoting self-employment through structured training, incubation support, and workshops.

India’s Leadership in Global Skilling

At the event, Jayant Chaudhary also unveiled a report on India’s participation at the World Economic Forum 2025 (WEF2025), titled "Leading with Vision for Skills and Innovation." This report highlights India’s advancements in skill development, industry collaborations, and the country’s role in shaping global workforce trends.

With structured training, dedicated mentorship, and financial backing, it empowers women to build enterprises that contribute to India’s economic growth.
