For centuries, women in business have battled against barriers—limited access to capital, restricted market entry, and societal norms that often place them at a disadvantage. Yet, despite these challenges, they have continued to make remarkable strides in various industries. Now, in a move that could redefine the trajectory of women-led businesses in India, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has launched the SheTrades India Hub, an initiative that aims to transform how Indian women entrepreneurs access and engage in global trade. TICE presents key details of this initiative.
The Vision Behind SheTrades India Hub
Unveiled in New Delhi on March 11, 2025, the SheTrades India Hub is the 20th such hub globally under the SheTrades initiative by the International Trade Centre (ITC). Funded by the UK Government’s SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme, the project seeks to break barriers and equip women entrepreneurs with the resources, mentorship, and connections they need to thrive in international markets.
India, home to millions of women-led enterprises, has long needed a robust framework to support women exporters, and this initiative comes as a timely intervention.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: What the Hub Offers
The SheTrades India Hub is more than just a support center—it is a one-stop resource platform designed to provide women entrepreneurs with:
-
Capacity-building workshops – Tailored training sessions focusing on international trade practices.
-
Mentorship programs – Access to seasoned business leaders who can guide and support.
-
Business matchmaking events – Connecting women entrepreneurs with global buyers and investors.
-
Policy advocacy – Working towards creating an ecosystem that is conducive to women-led trade.
-
Financial support guidance – Helping women navigate funding and investment options.
These offerings are designed to bridge critical gaps and facilitate smoother market access, making it easier for women entrepreneurs to scale their businesses beyond India.
Government and Industry Leaders Weigh In
The inauguration event saw key industry figures and policymakers rally behind the initiative.
Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India, emphasized the government’s commitment to making trade more inclusive. He called the SheTrades India Hub a “catalyst for integrating women-led businesses into global trade.” He also proposed that FIEO and ITC should work towards enrolling 300,000 women entrepreneurs through this initiative, ensuring significant outreach and impact.
Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of ITC, highlighted the global success of SheTrades Hubs and reiterated how these hubs have empowered thousands of women entrepreneurs worldwide. She expressed confidence that the Indian hub would serve as a gateway to international markets for local businesswomen.
FIEO’s leadership also echoed these sentiments:
-
Ashwani Kumar, President (Officiating), FIEO, called it a “pivotal moment for India’s trade ecosystem,” stressing that women entrepreneurs hold immense untapped potential.
-
Israr Ahmed, Vice President (Officiating), FIEO, pointed out how the $2 trillion global e-commerce market (by 2030) presents a golden opportunity for Indian women-led businesses.
-
Dr. Ajay Sahai, Director General & CEO, FIEO, highlighted the role of women in export-led industries like textiles and handicrafts and how initiatives like SheTrades can provide them with better exposure.
The UK Government’s Backing
The SheTrades India Hub has also garnered international support. Ms. Christina Scott, Acting High Commissioner & Chargé d’Affaires of the UK in India, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment, stating that this initiative aligns with global efforts to integrate women-owned businesses into international trade.
Training and Skill Development: Building a Stronger Workforce
To kickstart its activities, the SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme has announced an intensive training schedule:
-
March 17-18, 2025 – Training of Trainers on branding and digital marketing.
-
March 19-20, 2025 – Training sessions for women entrepreneurs focusing on market access strategies.
These programs will be instrumental in equipping women entrepreneurs with essential skills, ensuring they are not just participants in global trade but formidable competitors.
A Step Toward Economic Inclusion and Growth
With women playing a growing role in India’s economy, initiatives like SheTrades India Hub could be the missing link in unlocking their full potential. According to industry estimates, increasing women’s participation in trade could add $700 billion to India’s GDP by 2027.
The SheTrades India Hub is not just about creating business opportunities—it is about creating a movement, a future where Indian women entrepreneurs are recognized, empowered, and positioned at the forefront of global trade.
With the right support, access, and mentorship, this initiative could mark the beginning of a new chapter for India’s women-led businesses—one where they are no longer just trying to break barriers, but setting new global benchmarks.
