India’s Brightest Student Innovators Crowned at Futurepreneurs Challenge
The Futurepreneurs Challenge finale at Startup Mahakumbh celebrated the ingenuity of student-led innovation, as Hon’ble Minister Shri Jayant Chaudhary felicitated the winners. The event saw 10 top teams pitch breakthrough AI-powered solutions aimed at solving grassroots challenges.

Startup Mahakumbh Sparks Dialogue on R&D-Led Innovation for Viksit Bharat 2047
Day 3 of Startup Mahakumbh 2025 featured a high-impact panel discussion on “Startups Driving Innovation and R&D for Viksit Bharat 2047”, bringing together investors, bureaucrats, policymakers, and entrepreneurs for a deep dive into India’s evolving R&D ecosystem and its critical role in shaping the country's innovation-driven future.
Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, CEO of Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), moderated the session with a compelling question: “How can we increase R&D-led innovation in the country?” Highlighting the need for greater investment, he pointed out that while India allocates just 1% of its GDP to R&D, the US and Israel spend 3% and 5%, respectively.
Dr. Arvind Gupta, CEO of the Digital India Foundation, emphasized the need to embrace India’s innovation momentum while accelerating DeepTech and R&D initiatives.
“Nine years ago, when we started Startup India, we had just 400 startups. Today, we boast over 160,000 startups, 120 unicorns, and more than 5,000 DeepTech and R&D-led ventures,” he said.
He celebrated India’s leadership in fintech and digital public infrastructure, noting that “57% of global real-time payments happen in India,” and lauded platforms like UPI and ONDC, which are now being adopted by global tech giants like Meta, Google, and Amazon.
“We should proudly say we are an innovation-led nation. It’s time to shift gears—as Hon’ble Minister Piyush Goyal rightly said—and aim for deeper, more research-backed innovation in Round 2 of our startup journey,” Dr. Gupta added. “Let’s scale DeepTech startups from 4,000 to 100,000 and strive toward a $1 trillion R&D-led innovation economy as we move toward a $10 trillion national economy.”
Other distinguished panelists included Shri Panneerselvam Madangopal, CEO, MeitY Startup Hub; Vikram Gupta, Founder & Managing Partner, IvyCap Ventures; and Naganand Doraswamy, Managing Partner & Founder, Ideaspring Capital.

After inaugurating Startup Mahakumbh 2025 on April 3, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal returned to Bharat Mandapam on Day 2 for an immersive walkthrough of the mega startup exhibition, reaffirming the government’s strong support for India’s thriving startup ecosystem.
Now in its second edition, Startup Mahakumbh features 10 thematic pavilions showcasing groundbreaking innovations across key sectors including AI, DeepTech & Cybersecurity, HealthTech & BioTech, AgriTech, Climate Tech, FinTech, Mobility, Defence & Space Tech, Gaming & Sports, D2C, and B2B Manufacturing.
During his tour, Shri Goyal explored pioneering products and platforms—from AI-driven brain mapping tools and advanced defence drones to intelligent air purifiers and electric tractors—all reflecting the spirit of “Young India” driving change through research and innovation.
“The taste of innovative work that our young men and women have created through sheer tenacity, hard work, and spirit of enquiry is music to one’s ears,” said the Minister, addressing the media.
“From defence equipment to electronics to fintech solutions that empower citizens, the quality of innovation on display here is truly world-class. This is the foundation upon which India will step confidently into the global innovation arena,” he added, calling the experience “truly a lifetime memory.”
The Startup Mahakumbh exhibition floor is dotted with specially curated Startup Booths and Pods, giving over 3,000 startups a platform to showcase their innovations before 1,000+ investors, incubators, ecosystem partners, and international delegates from more than 50 countries. The event has already witnessed a footfall of over 1.07 lakh visitors in just two days.
Adding to the momentum, Shri Amardeep Bhatia, Secretary, DPIIT, engaged with startups across sectors and visited the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Pavilion, further strengthening global collaboration and showcasing India’s leadership in innovation diplomacy.
