As the world grapples with escalating environmental challenges, critical questions loom large: Who bears the greater responsibility for the planet's declining health? Should developed nations, which have historically benefited from unsustainable practices, take the lead in driving change? Or is it a collective obligation where every nation, regardless of its development stage, must contribute equally?
These pressing concerns set the stage for an essential dialogue on global sustainability, one that Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal addressed at the 29th Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit 2024 in Delhi.

Global South Not Responsible for Environmental Damage
On Monday, December 2, Minister Piyush Goyal delivered a strong message to the international community, asserting that the Global South is not responsible for the environmental degradation caused by developed nations. He pointed out that developed countries have historically enjoyed the advantages of low-cost energy while contributing significantly to global environmental issues.
He emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable consumption patterns to reduce the carbon footprint and tackle environmental challenges effectively.
“We need to be conscious of the waste and carbon footprint due to our current lifestyle patterns. This is going to be a core of a better future for the world,” he said.
The Role of Consumption in Environmental Challenges
Speaking at the summit, Goyal highlighted that environmental challenges stem more from consumption patterns than from manufacturing processes. He explained that manufacturing activities are driven by consumer demand and stressed the need to manage this demand more sustainably.
He called for a collective responsibility towards sustainability, advocating for environmentally sustainable products and urging people to rethink their consumption habits.
“Unless we address the consumption patterns, we are not going to resolve sustainability and environmental challenges,” he added
Differentiated Responsibilities in Sustainability
The Minister acknowledged that underdeveloped and less-developed nations were not primary contributors to environmental damage. However, he emphasized their essential role in building sustainable solutions. He advocated for the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities,” where nations’ contributions to environmental solutions are proportionate to their historical roles in causing the problem.
India’s Resilience and Technological Advancements
Highlighting India’s achievements, Goyal described the nation as a symbol of speed, scale, resilience, and determination. He emphasized the need to balance tradition and technology, particularly as advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Automation reshape employment and skills requirements.

-
S - Synergy: One Earth, One Family
-
P - Partnership: Productive partnerships, peaceful coexistence, and prosperity
-
A - Alignment: Alignment of actions
-
C - Common Good: Common benefits for all
