In a significant push toward strengthening connectivity and accelerating regional development, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a major expansion of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport. With an estimated investment of ₹1,677 crore, the project signals a decisive move toward transforming aviation infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir.

For a region where tourism, trade, and connectivity play a vital role in economic progress, this expansion is more than just an infrastructure upgrade — it is a strategic step toward unlocking new opportunities.

 Srinagar International Airport

A Gateway Ready for the Future

Located approximately 12 kilometers from Srinagar city, the Srinagar International Airport operates within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and is managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). It was designated as an international airport in 2005 and has since served as a critical gateway to the Kashmir Valley.

Now, with air traffic steadily growing and tourism demand increasing, the need for modern, expanded passenger infrastructure has become urgent. The newly approved Civil Enclave project directly addresses this demand.

Spread across 73.18 acres, the new development will include a state-of-the-art terminal building spanning 71,500 square meters. Designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours, the facility will support an annual capacity of 10 million passengers — a significant upgrade aimed at future-proofing the airport.

What the Expansion Includes

The project goes beyond just building a larger terminal.

It includes:

  • An expanded apron with 15 aircraft parking bays, including one wide-body aircraft bay.

  • A multi-level car parking facility with capacity for approximately 1,000 vehicles.

  • Modernized passenger processing systems to streamline travel.

  • Spacious lounges and upgraded security and check-in facilities.

  • Continued operation of the existing 3,658-meter runway by the Indian Air Force.

Together, these additions are expected to substantially improve operational efficiency and passenger convenience, making travel to and from Srinagar smoother and more seamless.

Architecture That Reflects Kashmir’s Identity

One of the defining elements of the new Civil Enclave is its design philosophy. Rather than opting for a generic modern structure, the terminal will blend contemporary architecture with Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage.

Traditional woodwork, locally inspired craftsmanship, and region-specific design elements will be incorporated into the structure. The aim is to create a terminal that not only functions efficiently but also offers travelers a sense of place the moment they arrive.

For tourists visiting the Valley, the airport experience itself will become part of the journey.

Sustainability at the Core

In line with India’s broader sustainability goals, the project places strong emphasis on environmentally responsible development.

The new terminal is targeted to achieve a prestigious 5-star GRIHA sustainability rating. To meet this benchmark, the design includes:

  • Advanced water harvesting systems

  • Enhanced natural lighting

  • Use of eco-friendly and locally sourced materials

  • Measures to reduce overall carbon footprint

By integrating green building principles from the outset, the expansion sets a benchmark for future airport infrastructure projects in the country.

A Boost to Tourism and Business

Srinagar serves as the gateway to some of India’s most iconic tourist destinations — Dal Lake, the Shankaracharya Temple, and the historic Mughal Gardens. Improved air connectivity is expected to directly support increased tourist inflow, particularly during peak travel seasons.

But the impact will extend beyond leisure travel.

Enhanced infrastructure and higher passenger capacity are likely to encourage business travel, attract investments, and generate employment opportunities in the region. Improved accessibility often acts as a catalyst for economic activity, and this development positions Srinagar to strengthen its role as both a tourism and business hub.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

As passenger volumes continue to rise across India, expanding regional airports has become central to the country’s aviation growth strategy. The approval of the Civil Enclave expansion reflects this broader vision.

With improved passenger handling capacity, modern amenities, and sustainable infrastructure, Srinagar International Airport is poised to enter a new phase of growth.

The ₹1,677 crore investment is not just about infrastructure — it is about reinforcing connectivity, enhancing travel experience, and supporting economic momentum in Jammu & Kashmir.

As the new Civil Enclave takes shape, it promises to redefine the gateway to the Valley — making arrivals and departures smoother, more efficient, and distinctly reflective of Kashmir’s unique identity.
