How Safe is AI for your Company? India’s Ransomware Reality

A new report by OpenText highlights the growing threat of AI-driven ransomware in India, with cybercriminals using AI to create more sophisticated phishing and impersonation attacks

Nearly half of Indian organizations experienced a ransomware attack in the past year, with over 70% noticing an increase in AI-driven threats, making India one of the most targeted countries

While 95% of Indian companies allow the use of AI tools, only about half have formal governance or data privacy policies, leaving them vulnerable to attacks

Indian organizations are among the most likely to pay ransoms, with nearly 70% doing so, yet only 12% fully recover their data, indicating a gap between perceived and actual preparedness

Despite these challenges, Indian companies are ramping up cybersecurity efforts, focusing on cloud security, network protection, and backup technologies to combat rising threats

Ransomware is now recognized as a top business risk in 84% of Indian boardrooms, leading to increased security awareness training and regular testing of recovery plans

The report warns that third-party vendors pose significant risks, with nearly two-thirds of Indian organizations affected by vendor-related breaches in the past year

To address these risks, 91% of organizations conduct formal cybersecurity assessments of their suppliers, while 83% outsource parts of their security operations to managed service providers

The findings emphasize that combating ransomware requires collaboration among organizations, partners, and technology providers to close security gaps

The focus for Indian enterprises is shifting from recovery speed to intelligent governance and shared responsibility across digital networks to prepare for inevitable AI-driven attacks
